Music Review: Talking Dreams

So this time it's been five months since I've posted. Cringe. But I've been listening to more music and watching more movies so more reviews are sure to follow.

The Basics:

Talking Dreams is sibling-based indie-rock band Echosmith's debut album. It's theme is a common one with a twist: teenagers having fun--clean, alchohol- and drug-free fun. With positive lyrics and upbeat tunes, it's no wonder their singles, and their album as a whole, has become so popular.

The Goods:

I personally love several of Echoscmith's songs--mostly for their lyrics. I especially like March Into the Sun, in which they say

I got your hand in my hand / No drinks in sight / It's how we start a fire, with a natural high
This, to me, proves again that they feel that we don't need alcohol and drugs to have a good time--and this is a really positive message that a lot more teens need to hear.

Another thing I love is their sound. To me, their songs always make me feel something, or see some sort of scene laid out before me. For instance, the acoustic version of their hit single Cool Kids makes me imagine a starry night sky opening up and just spilling out all the purples and blues from our galaxy (that sounds insanely weird, but it's just what I imagine). And Tell Her You Love Her just makes me think of a sunny spring day with the smell of clean linen wafting through the air. Once again, makes no sense, but it's how I feel listening to their songs.

The Bads:

I personally can't pick out any bad things in their music (if any of you follow my main blog, you know this is because I looove their music), but some have complained that while Echosmith calls themselves a "rock band", their music sounds very little like rock--hard rock, pop rock, or otherwise. I honestly don't know which sound categorizes you as "rock", but I've always seen them as an indie/pop band. I guess since their music is labeled as "rock", people may have been expecting more of a rock sound (again, whatever sound that is) but I never really thought of them that way.

So, I say all of that gibberish to say: if you're expecting them to be a rock band, they don't really sound like one. Which I definitely don't see as a problem, but some might.

Another thing some people may have trouble with is the lyrics of Tell Her You Love Her, in which a guy is told how to treat a girl. Some may disagree with the advice given, as he's told to compliment her, be honest with her, and basically say back to her everything she says to him (i.e. saying he needs her, sharing secrets back with her, and ultimately telling her he loves her).

There's nothing necessarily wrong with this advice, but some might feel that you shouldn't have to prompt someone to share their feelings, or advise them to say something to a girl just because she said it first (especially if you don't really mean it). But it's really based off of your personal opinion.

The "Oopsies":

There weren't any technical errors that I could find in this album.

Fave song:

And I see colors in a different way / You make what doesn't matter fade to grey / Life is good and that's the way it should be

Least fave song:

I don't have a least favorite song. I'm telling you, I LOVE this album.

Wrap-up:

Overall, Talking Dreams is a nicely put-together album filled with fun, upbeat, and positive songs. I'd say this album is even good for Christians--although it isn't necessarily a Christian album, it still has the same positive and innocent themes that Christian songs do. If you haven't heard any of Echosmith's songs (WHAT ARE YOU DOING AGHH) or you've only heard Cool Kids, I'd suggest trying some of their other songs!
